The state championship game was played against Key West, and the venue was Ft. Pierce, Florida. The game featured Dave Amsler pitching against George Mira, who later gained fame as a Miami Hurricane quarterback and was drafted as the 15th pick in the second round by the San Francisco 49ers. John Boog Powell, who later gained professional baseball fame with the Baltimore Orioles, and who grew up in Lakeland, also played for Key West. Obviously, Dave's pitching kept Boog's bat in check on that eventful day.
